The Victims of the Fire

Of the nine Kenyon College students who died as a result of the 1949 fire, six perished in Middle Kenyon in the blaze, two died of injuries sustained leaping from the third floor, and one succumbed at Mount Vernon Mercy Hospital of burns.

Among the dead:

Ernest Ahwajee, a nineteen-year-old sophomore from Akron, Ohio. Died in Middle Kenyon.

Edward Hyman Brout, a nineteen-year-old senior from Mount Vernon, New York. Died leaping from the third floor of Middle Kenyon.

Albert John Lewis, a nineteen-year-old sophomore from Hazelton, Pennsylvania. Died in Middle Kenyon.

Martin Elliott Mangel, a seventeen-year-old freshman from New York City. Died in Middle Kenyon.

Jack Boland McDonald, a freshman from Hamilton, Ohio. Died at Mount Vernon Mercy Hospital of injuries sustained leaping from the third floor of Middle Kenyon.

Marc Spencer Peck, a twenty-year-old sophomore from Fenton, Michigan. Died at Mount Vernon Mercy Hospital of burns.

George Leon Pincus, a nineteen-year-old junior from Brooklyn, New York. Died in Middle Kenyon.

Stephen Mahlon Shepard, a nineteen-year-old freshman from New York City. Died in Middle Kenyon.

Colin Macrae Woodworth, a twenty-year-old sophomore from Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. Died in Middle Kenyon.
