Christian Martinez-Canchola '12

Dallas, Texas
Majors: English and sociology

Mother tongue: The phrase on Martínez-Canchola's back- written in Spanish, her first language-cannot be translated economically into English. "Échale ganas," a Mexican motivational phrase she heard from her parents many times while growing up, means "give it your all and keep on trying, don't give up." It was her parents' way of offering support "whenever I needed that little bit of encouragement to keep me going" and the tattoo is a reminder that her parents 'have her back'—literally and figuratively. She chose a font based on Jane Austen's handwriting in tribute to her love of English literature.
